Alex Mikulich is a Catholic theologian and social ethicist, award winning author, antiracism facilitator, and activist. His latest book, Unlearning White Supremacy: A Spirituality for Racial Liberation, will be published by Orbis Books in June 2022. His previous books include The Scandal of White Complicity in US Hyper-Incarceration: A Nonviolent Spirituality of White Resistance (Palgrave MacMillan, 2013) and Interrupting White Privilege: Catholic Theologians Break the Silence (Orbis Books, 2007) which won the 2008 Theological Book of the Year Award. Alex’s scholarship and essays address the intersection of modernity/coloniality, anti-Black white supremacy, and living inter-spiritually with all of our human and non-human kin so that the entire web of life may flourish and thrive. He has served as an invited member of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium since 2008. He provides tailored presentations, workshops, antiracism facilitation, and group spiritual reflection informed by Ignatian, Franciscan, Carmelite, womanist, and ecological spiritual traditions.
Drawing on the writings of James Baldwin, W. E. B. DuBois, M. Shawn Copeland, and others, the author weaves together historical, theological, ethical, and sociological analysis to understand the origins and evolution of anti-Black white supremacy and to suggest ways in which white Christians in particular can work to overcome it in themselves and in their institutions.
